An 18-year-old from Texas was shot dead by police after he was found wandering the streets in his underwear near his family’s mansion and firing a handgun.
Austin Hodo was killed near his family’s $1.3 million home in Bent Tree, a gated community in Boerne, near San Antonio, in the early hours of Wednesday after sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of shots being fired.
Black-and-white dashcam footage released by the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office shows the teen walking towards the unseen officers holding a gun in his left hand and dragging a shirt in his right.
Hodo, seemingly dazed, continues walking towards the four deputies as they scream at him to stop and drop the weapon.
“Drop the gun! Drop it!” the cops yell repeatedly.
The teen ignores their commands and raises the gun and lets off a shot. The video cuts out, while audio captures the sound of gunfire as the deputies shoot back, fatally injuring Hodo.
The deputies, who arrived at the scene just after 5 a.m., had been told that one neighbor had already been shot at, local news station KENS5 reports.
Kendall County Sheriff Al Auxier said despite efforts to revive him, Hodo was pronounced dead at the scene.
Dispatcher audio obtained by KENS5 indicated radio transmissions of the incident began at 4:55 a.m.
“We have a shooting in the 100 block of Bent Tree. Can we have you guys start heading that way?” a dispatcher tells deputies.
“Someone just fired a gun. It will be a male standing in the middle of the roadway. He’s going to be in his underwear shooting.”
As the four deputies make their way towards the scene, the dispatcher reports multiple 911 calls have been received.
“Someone just fired a gun. It will be a male standing in the middle of the roadway. He’s going to be in his underwear shooting.”
“He has a handgun, and he tried to shoot at the caller,” the dispatcher says.
Deputies arrived on the scene at 5:04 a.m., with one heard telling another, “I want you to roll up with me. I’m going to use your car for cover.”
Shortly thereafter, one of the deputies relays that they see the man described by the callers.
“He’s got a gun in his left hand!” he reports.
The audio picks up after the shooting, with radio deputies radioing, “Shots fired! Shots fired!” followed by calls for emergency services.
The cops report they are applying tourniquets to the injured man.
EMS services arrive and advise the man has a slight pulse, but Hodo is pronounced dead a few minutes later.
