Keber Martinez, 25, was sentenced Thursday after pleading guilty to first-degree assault over the Jan. 25, 2022, shooting spree that injured one man and sent dozens of staff and patients running for cover.
“The defendant opened fire inside Jacobi’s emergency room, wounding one man and showing complete disregard for the patients and staff, with one bullet lodging in a wall close to a woman holding a baby,” Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark said.
“The defendant’s violent actions have now been answered with a substantial prison sentence.”
Martinez was spotted on surveillance footage wearing a dark hoodie standing at a desk inside the emergency waiting area.
He was seen pulling out a gun and running at another man while firing multiple times.
Martinez aimed four shots at the victim, 35, who was hit in the left arm, investigators said at the time.
Others inside the waiting area were forced to dive for cover under chairs and other furniture until Martinez fled the scene on foot, leaving a trail of blood leading to the victim.
The hospital was temporarily shut down in the wake of the shooting, while the injured man was taken to the operating room for treatment.
Martinez was caught about 12 hours later in Harlem, according to police.
He was located in part via his hospital check-in information, in which he complained of asthma issues.
He was arrested after his sister called 911 to report her brother was acting erratically, hearing voices, and had a gun, NBC New York reported.
It is believed that the victim and Martinez knew each other.
In addition to 12 years behind bars, Martinez will also have to undergo five years of post-release supervision.
