House Speaker election live updates: Rep. Jim Jordan will back Patrick McHenry as temporary chamber leader amid deadlock

Republican contender for Speaker of the House Jim Jordan to support a resolution Thursday that would give fresh powers to current speaker pro tempore Patrick McHenry of North Carolina.

GOP reps in the House are currently in a closed-door meeting that began Thursday at 11 a.m.

Jordan (R-Ohio) received 200 and 199 votes on the first two ballots, respectively, with nearly two dozen Republicans withholding support from their colleague

The House has been unable to conduct any business since the ouster of Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) on Oct. 3.

GOP reps have drawn out the impasse for weeks now, despite a backdrop of the ongoing war in Ukraine, the outbreak of war in Israel and a looming Nov. 17 deadline to avoid a partial government shutdown.
