Matthew James Ruth ID’d as suspect in fatal shooting of 3 Pennsylvania cops as they served stalking warrant

Matthew James Ruth, of Hanover, unleashed the fatal round of gunfire Wednesday when police followed up on a domestic-related probe that began the day before, a law enforcement official told the Associated Press.

Ruth was killed by police during the exchange of gunfire.

He was charged earlier in the day with stalking, prowling at nighttime and criminal trespass after he was suspected of lurking around a woman’s home in North Codorus Township late Tuesday, according to a probable cause affidavit obtained by local news outlets.

The resident told police she could see a man decked out in camouflage and looking into the home using binoculars, the affidavit said.

Responding police could not find the man at the time.

The three slain officers have not been publicly identified, and it is unclear what agency they were with. The two injured officers are listed in critical but stable condition, authorities said.
