Hannah Kobayashi, 30, was heading to New York City to visit family on Friday, but she missed her connecting flight out of Los Angeles. âI didnât hear from her,â said Kobayashiâs mother, Brandi Yee. âI texted her, âHey, are you in New York City yet?â She just texted me, âNot yet.ââ Yee says Kobayashi was looking forward to seeing her aunt in the Big Apple. She even made a hand-written itinerary stating, âBucket list dreams become a reality.â Yee said, âMy sister, I reached out to her, and Iâm like, âHey, have you heard from Hannah?â Sheâs like, âNo. Sheâs supposed to meet me at the hotel in New York City and weâre supposed to go to a show tonight.ââ Hannah only had 42 minutes to make her connecting flight. Her mom thinks she might have missed it. A short YouTube video surfacing on Thursday backs up her belief. It shows Hannah outside of an event in Los Angeles on Saturday. The last pinned location the family has on her phone shows Hannah back at LAX on Monday. Since then, the Haiku resident has fallen silent, and her family hasnât heard from her. One friend, however, received strange text messages from Kobayashiâs phone. The messages read in part, âI got tricked pretty much into giving away all my funds,â with a second message that said, âFor someone I thought I loved.â âShe heard from Hannah. She was at LAX, and she said that she was scared,â Yee said. Kobayashiâs sister, Sydni Kobayashi, said, âShe texted her that she was scared and that she couldnât come back home or something. It was just really weird texts.â Sydni Kobayashi added, âItâs weird to me because it doesnât sound like her, like thereâs just something off about it. So I wasnât too sure. I donât know if itâs her or if someone else was texting.â The family has filed a missing personâs report with the Los Angeles Police Department. âWe just wanted to get the word out as soon as possible, because the more time that passes, the less we know what happens,â said Yee. âAnything could happen.â

Kobayashi meant to miss her connecting flight from LAX to New York on Nov. 8, LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell said last week, according to ABC 7.

“On Friday, Nov. 8, 23-year-old Hannah Kobayashi missed her connecting flight from LAX to New York, which the investigation determined was intentional,” McDonnell said.

Distraught relatives of Kobayashi vehemently denied McDonnell’s findings, also noting he gave an incorrect age for the missing 30-year-old and incorrect dates for the timeline when she was reported missing.

“Based on information, surveillance footage reviewed and information shared with us, these are the facts known to my mother and I: It does not appear that Hannah intentionally missed her flight,” Kobayashi’s sister Sydni said in a statement.

“The lack of communication surrounding some important details has left us feeling excluded from potentially crucial developments. However, we do remain hopeful and optimistic that the Los Angeles Police Department is doing everything in their power to assist us in locating Hannah,” she added.

After Kobayashi missed her connecting flight to New York on Nov. 8, cryptic details began to emerge about her whereabouts, including suspicious text messages to friends and mysterious Venmo payments to strangers.

Her father, Ryan Kobayashi, flew to Los Angeles to help in the search. His body was found in a parking lot near LAX around mid-November. Authorities determined he died by suicide.

“Our hearts go out to the Kobayashi family during this unimaginable time of grief,” McDonnell said. “We remain fully committed to locating Hannah and supporting the family as they navigate their way through this tragedy.”
