NYPD detective shot in ‘friendly fire’ as officers come across carjacking on Queens expressway during morning rush

The detective — who is assigned to the department’s Queens North Warrants Squad — was shot in the leg and arm around 8:50 a.m. on the Whitestone Expressway near 22nd Road, according to authorities and law enforcement sources.

He was rushed in a police vehicle to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where he is conscious and alert with non-life-threatening injuries.

The shooting erupted when narcotics detectives heading back to their command after serving a warrant encountered a 28-year-old man trying to carjack and rob a TLC driver in a Toyota Sienna, the sources said.

A short time earlier, the same suspect — a parolee with nearly two dozen arrests, including one just a day ago for fare evasion — had also attempted to carjack a woman, but was unsuccessful, according to the sources.

The suspect – who already has 21 arrests on his record – was taken into custody, according to the sources.

His name was not officially released, pending charges.

The alleged attempted carjacker was just paroled in March on attempted robbery charges from December of 2023 in Brooklyn, according to online state Department of Corrections records.

His parole is set to expire in October.

He was set to appear in court on those charges on Sept. 9.

He also had previous 2023 arrests for robbery in Brooklyn and a criminal possession of a weapon bust in Midtown, according to the sources.

His record dates back to 2016, also including arrests for domestic violence assault and assault on a police officer, the sources said.
