Rep. Ronny Jackson cuffed, ‘briefly detained’ at rodeo while helping with medical emergency: report

Texas Rep. Ronny Jackson was “briefly detained” by police while attempting to help a teenage girl who was suffering a medical episode at a rodeo over the weekend, his office confirmed.

Jackson, a doctor who previously served as the White House physician for Presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump, was reportedly placed in handcuffs at the White Deer Rodeo on Saturday while trying to assist the 15-year-old.

“Dr. Jackson sat in the stands during the entire rodeo, in full view of the assembled crowd, and was not drinking,” his office said in a statement provided to The Daily Beast.

“When Dr. Jackson arrived at the scene, there was a relative, who happened to be a nurse, already providing assistance. Dr. Jackson explained that he was a physician and asked her if she needed help, and she said yes.”

Jackson’s office said there were no EMTs in the area at the time, and while trying to help the girl “in a very loud and chaotic environment,” there was confusion among responding police officers and the congressman was “briefly detained and was actually prevented from further assisting the patient.”

“He was immediately released as soon as law enforcement realized that he, as a medical professional, was tending to the young girl’s medical emergency,” Jackson’s office said.

The Post has reached out to Jackson’s office for comment.

The nurse and relative of the girl Jackson mentioned, Linda Dianne Shouse, said in a Facebook post that the teenager was “seizing due to possible hypoglycemia,” CNN reported.

Shouse and another relative, who is also a nurse, were aiding the girl when Jackson showed up.

She told CNN she had no clue that Jackson was a congressman or a doctor at the time.

“We were just waiting for EMS to get there. The police came up, the deputies, highway patrol, and everyone was just screaming, ‘Get back, get back, get back,’” she said.

Shouse said she was pushed back and punched in the chest by a woman during the fracas. One law enforcement officer got in the congressman’s face and screamed “Get the f–k back,” she told the outlet.

“He was trying to tell them that he was a doctor and probably trying to tell him who he was, to be honest. And they were screaming that they did not effing care who he was,” she said. “And the next thing I knew, they had him on the ground, grabbed him by the shirt, threw him on the ground, face first into the concrete and had him in cuffs.”

As soon as authorities realized who he was, they released him and apologized, she said.

Shouse said the scene was “under control” before police arrived and they were just waiting for EMS to arrive.

“She wound up going [with EMS] eventually, but whenever you have someone laying there – when it could be neurological – time is on your hands,” she said.

Carson County Sheriff Tam Terry told the Texas Tribune that his department is investigating the incident.

The girl is back in her hometown and is undergoing further evaluation, Shouse told CNN.
