Suspect in CT mall shooting identified as Tajuan Washington, a 19-year-old who was out on $25K bond

Tajuan Washington, 19, opened fire after confronting another man he “had a history” of “beef” with at the Brass Mill Center in Waterbury Tuesday afternoon, striking the man and four women he was with, Mayor Paul K. Pernerewski, Jr., said during a news conference.

The mayor and police officials said that the shooting, which happened near the 1.1 million square-foot mall’s main entrance, was not a random act of violence.

“This was a one-off incident,” the mayor said, adding that the mall was safe for shopping.

Washington was out on a $25,000 bond after he was arrested in October for driving 105 miles per hour with his lights off on Interstate 84 East, according to Waterbury Police Chief Fred Spagnolo.

Washington on Wednesday was charged with five counts of first-degree assault and other weapons charges, the chief said.

He’s being held on a $2 million bond and is expected to appear in court today.

Three of the five victims had been discharged from the hospital by Tuesday morning and the other two victims were stable, including one woman who was shot in her spine, the mayor said.

All of the victims were between 18 and mid-20s, according to police.

Authorities were still investigating the root of Washington and the male victim’s dispute.
