Zohran Mamdani goes scorched earth on Dems’ lack of ‘vision,’ but praises ‘productive’ bromance with Trump

Mayor Zohran Mamdani blasted the Democratic Party’s lack of vision Sunday while touting his “productive” and surprising bromance with President Trump.

The fledgling mayor, a 34-year-old Democratic socialist, was asked by “Meet the Press” host Kristen Welker whether massive “generational change” was needed to replace older politicians with younger candidates to invigorate the national Democratic Party.

“It’s time to have a party that reflects the urgency we see across our country, in terms of a hunger, frankly, that is not as much tied just to age, but vision,” Mamdani said.

“We know very well what we oppose. What are we for?” he added. “That is a question we have to be able to answer. What we are fighting for? … That is the heart of the question for our party.”

Mamdani bragged that whether people agreed with him or not, he laid out a clear agenda — a vision — when he ran for mayor last year. But the national party has lost its way from its mission a century ago, he said.

“When you look back at the history books of our party 100 years ago, we had a very clear vision of who we were fighting for,” he said. “It is sad that for too many Americans, when they want to look for ambition in the Democratic Party, they have to turn to a history book.”

He ducked questions on whether former Vice President Kamala Harris should run again for president in 2028, saying he’s focus on his first year duties as mayor and the 2026 Midterm congressional elections.

The mayor also sidestepped answering whether he thought Senate Democratic Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who represents New York, should step aside. He said he’s worked with Schumer on key issues, such as assisting delivery workers.

Mamdani praised fellow lefty Democratic socialist and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, saying he’s “very excited” about her future.

Despite ideological differences on many issues, Mamdani said he has a “productive” relationship with Trump.

“It’s honest, it’s direct and it’s productive,” Mamdani said.

The one big thing they have in common, he said, is “our love for New York City” and “how to deliver” for the Big Apple.

Mamdani said he has an advantage over mayors in other parts of the country when communicating with the president because Trump is a native New Yorker who is deeply knowledgeable about the city’s government operations and life.

The one big thing they have in common, he said, is “our love for New York City” and “how to deliver” for the Big Apple.

He emphasized he has expressed his disgreements with Trump about ICE raids and other issues.
